code bend time
Our voices convey so much. They carry the weight of our history, our upbringing, our culture. They represent our psychology, our status. The meaning of the words we say is coloured by the phonemes that structure them.

"code bend time" is a participatory durational performance installation for the diversity of cultural elements that movement and language carry. It is an inclusive invitation for communication. Evangelia Kolyra responds physically to the infinite variations of tone, pitch and timbre brought to bear upon the phonemes of several languages as spoken by her audience.

This playful and imaginative kinetic experiment is open to spectators of all ages and the “personality” of every voice. The audience is invited to participate in the making of a performative work taking the roles of performer and/or viewer. The result is a thrilling and humorous narrative building performance that questions the nature and nurturing of language and interaction between art and its audience.

Romeo & Juliet
Romeo and Juliet is the strongest love story we know. Can it still tell us something? We think yes: about human nature, about responsibility towards each other and about how choices can be life changing. Through storytelling we use our voices, bodies and hands to make a visualization of Shakespeare's play.

We interact with the audiences so that they too can take part in the story.

Exodus - Trilogy of Escaping People
Buy tickets here.

The Ararat Ensemble Orchestra is a collective of musicians - including some multi-instrumentalists - which, thanks to experience in the field of experimental theater and improvisation, has developed its own personality.

The sound of the AEO is semi-acoustic, with a cohesive sound projection, where improvisation is fluently integrated in the written orchestral texture, it explicitly recalls music from film, while also taking elements from world music, avant-garde music and jazz orchestras (i.e. Liberation Music Orchestra) or pop music influences (i.e. Tom Waits). Everything has an Italian touch, strongly related to the country’s lyrical tradition that results in a direct approach to the audience.

This show is based on our last CD, EXODUS-Trilogy of escaping peoples, a three year-long project. The project is divided into three different suites: the Armenian Suite -composed for the centenary of the Metz Yeghern -, the African Suite - dedicated to the griot and soloist of the National Orchestra from Senegal, Aliou Ndiaye -, and the Latin-American Suite composed in association with a Chilean composer, Leonardo Bolgeri. With music from swing to funky, passing through to reggae, milonga and soul, the idea of the show is to travel, like an exodus without the fear of getting lost. Because only by getting lost will we find ourselves.

Under Dark Skies I lie and hear the wind that comes from lands forgotten
Under Dark Skies (...) is a performance experiment on solitude inspired by the biblical story of Jonah.

Starting from Emil Cioran’s statement: “One can experience loneliness in two ways: by feeling lonely in the world or by feeling the loneliness of the world.”, Under Dark Skies (...) is investigating the soft lines between loneliness and solitude; between obligation and desire; between restriction and freedom.

Escaping society could be the best thing that ever happened to J, only to find himself alone and captive in his own mind. Having to journey himself into understanding urban loneliness, he launches into his own being, discovering chaos before peace.

A story about understanding, reconstructing, and forgiving our modern society.

Liquid States
Buy tickets here.

Cave Dogs live shadow performance, Liquid States, explores land and water as physical substance and metaphoric allusion. This work focuses on land and water use in its many physical states and cultural circumstances, narratives, histories, memories and journeys. The performance forms a collective narrative that addresses mankind’s complicated relationship to essential natural resources.

Liquid States, consists of innovative, large-scale shadow projections cast onto a screen from a variety of props, puppets, costumes and the human body. Shadows move in concert with projected video, animation, spoken narrative, and an original soundtrack.

We create multiple, richly layered visual tableaus, and produce effects that conjure both the dreamlike quality of early experimental film and the humor of contemporary animation.

It’s magical, like watching dreams cross into the conscious world.

We teach trees to dance and whales to sing.

Liquid States, is both abstract documentary and fictionalized realism. The show weaves together imagery and sounds to create a stimulating experience that documents, and celebrates important cultural voices, social identities and environmental perspectives.

Someone Else's Sadness
Someone Else's Sadness is Reykjavik funny man Huw Coverdale Jones pillaging the worlds of fictional sadness to bring a refreshing series of bittersweet hilarity. A man of comparative privilege looks to professional and rightful miseries such as Johnny Cash and Leonard Cohen for inspiration in finding funnies between the whiskey soaked tears.

This 100% new show follows on from last year’s Two Years of Dry Misery, being composed entirely of material written since last year’s Reykjavik Fringe. Those looking for a combination of mystical one liners and pretend rugged living will not be disappointed, hopefully. The Secret Cellar and Kaffi Lækur will host this man’s dangerous ideas.

In keeping with the fringe spirit, the show will be pay what you want, with a suggested 500ISK charge. Those who wish to buy in advance will pay 500ISK for a reserved seat at the venue of their choice. This is capped at 50, the maximum seating at Kaffi Lækur.

THIS BODY
The SYSTERIA art collective has, like so many others, our own experiences of sexual and bodily humiliation much like the ones portrayed over a year ago. But also not.

Many of us were hoping for a revolution concerning (straight) male behaviour towards female bodies.
We were also wondering about the stories mostly told. And heard. Which bodies where listened to? Whose testimonies where embraced?

SYSTERIA art collective aims to explore the relationship and power to our bodies.

The Punk culture revolutionized both the Icelandic music scene and the way Icelandic artists approached their cultural heritage. The Punk Walk will take you around the Reykjavík centre, visiting historic Punk haunts and telling the tale of how Punk reached the black Icelandic shores and what it did when it came here.

The walk is lead by Unnur Máney, an artist and an Icelandic historian that has focused on the oral history of Icelandic punk culture. You will be treated to exclusive images and sound during the walk.

In my show, I talk about stuff like: I wrote new lyrics for popular songs in my own way, I'll guide you through what to do if you get hit on all the time because of your charm, and I have lots of really good points for you in general if you have a problem of being too sexy and charming.
I use my sarcasm really much in this show, and my dark satire humour.

Science, Love and Revolution
SCIENCE, LOVE AND REVOLUTION
“Is it all over? What’s left of the communist ideal, now that the great revolutions of the last century have been defeated? UK and BBC Slam Poetry champion David Lee Morgan spits rhythm, rhyme and intense lyrics over music tracks composed by Michael Harding of Animat.

SCIENCE, LOVE AND REVOLUTION features poetry developed through performance on the London spoken word scene over the years immediately following the Arab Spring.

London attracts people from all over the UK and from all over the world, different poetic traditions, musical traditions, different philosophies, religions and politics. The spoken word scene became a forum, kind of an international university – and a wake up call, a challenge to think about our deepest beliefs.

SCIENCE, LOVE AND REVOLUTION was first performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and featured at StAnza, Scotland’s International Poetry Festival.

REVIEWS of SCIENCE, LOVE AND REVOLUTION:

TIME OUT LONDON ***** I am awed by Morgan's passion, his humorous yet enraged intellectual appraisal… An energetic, clever, passionate survey of human life.

THE SCOTSMAN **** One of those rare, passionate performances... bristling with energy and interesting ideas. If you want a bracing crash course in how to “read history… with a f***ing blowtorch,” look no further. A driving score by Michael Harding, supplemented by a smattering of saxophone solos from the poet himself, manages to complement the text without competing with it.

The Swan Woman
In 2011, the police forced the 25m2 apartment belonging to a single woman, at Kungsholms Torg in Stockholm (Sweden), after the neighbors alerted a stench. They found 13 living swans. The news reports about the woman who lived there, and was later arrested and sentenced, have since been one of an urban legend as no names or pictures were ever released. Her only public statement was "You get more love from a swan than you can ever get from another person". Who was she, who lived in the periphery of society?

Buy tickets here.

Rebecka Pershagen has created a piece outside of conventions: a form of modern fable with a 10-channel sound collage in which interviews with the women's friends and others are interspersed with mythology about the swan, classical music, statistics on solitude in Sweden etc, while on the stage we follow her in her apartment, played by Pershagen, during what turns out to be the last hours of her life.

The critically acclaimed, award winning and sold out piece has been performed in Stockholm and Gothenburg during 2018, and will tour to Åbo and Bergen in 2019.

This tour is supported by Svensk-Isländska Kulturfonden, The Swedish Arts Grant Committee and Nordic Culture Point.

Hótel hamingja / Hotel Hapenis
We welcome you to Engilbert's memorial service at Hotel Happiness. Engilbert was a true Icelander who died on the 17th of June. We will celebrate his life and (mostly) death. His widow Carmen holds this dramatic but entertaining service in the company of his friends, enemies and strangers.

Hotel Happiness is a new play written and performed by Leikhópurinn X. We focus on character work and the interaction between the characters at the hotel. The goal with our work is always to make our audience laugh and make them think.

We were inspired to choose and evolve our own characters and bring them together in a funny setting. The play reminds the audience that each and everyone of us is dealing with all kinds of things so each person will have their own baggage that they drag along with them into every situation. We try to do it in a funny way so it is in a way bitter sweet. After all, laughter is the best medicine.

Buy tickets here.

Come experience the hilarious examination of expectation vs reality of life in your mid 30’s.
Jono has become known throughout Iceland for his irreverent charm, quick tongue and non-apologetic brand of humour since he first moved here in 2015, and Jesus year promises to hold nothing back.

What is it like to do a comedy tour of Europe? How do you succeed as a very gay comedian in an industry run by straight white guys? How does it feel to have an unsuccessful TV show?

All of this and more will be answered in his return to the Reykjavík Fringe Festival.
Jono’s previous stand up show ‘I wouldn’t date me either’ was a stand out hit last year, and ‘Jesus Year’ promises to not disappoint.

He’s never been crucified or started a religion, but Jono has certainly done (and failed at) enough to make you laugh for an hour.

We Are So Small
We are so Small is a series of large oil paintings by the up and coming painter Sindri "Sparkle" Freyr. They explore our place in the universe and the beauty of irrelevance. When we are so small and the world doesn't care then we can do what we want and there's so much to see. The show will be in Gallerí Fold from the 1st until the 6th of July and entry is free.

We interact with the audiences so that they too can take part in the story.

code bend time
Our voices convey so much.

THE CHESS PLAYER
Imprisoned in solitary confinement by Nazis, a stolen book of chess games becomes The Prisoner’s only way to cling to sanity. Fighting madness, he chooses schizophrenia, surviving by dividing his mind into two feuding chess masters. After his escape, he dares himself to walk the edge of a volcano of madness as he challenges the greatest chess player in the world to a match in Richard McElvain's reimagining of Stefan Zweig’s classic.

As the story unfolds, the narrator builds a meta-theatre frame around the play examining the power of illusion, arguing passionately that, like the prisoner, we depend on illusions to survive and live another day. For example, going to the theatre.

Birgitta Sigursteinsdóttir and Ester Sveinbjarnardóttir are two lovely ladies from Iceland. During the show they will act out different Icelandic creatures and mythical characters, and do their very best to teach you about their absurd culture.

The play is a comedy sketch show which is split into a few parts with each one making fun of these kinds of Icelandic characters. As well as mixing in some "normal" Icelanders sketches along the way. It can be a challenge to survive on this weird little island in the middle of nowhere when you are surrounded by relatives all the time. Multiple characters filled with history and humour.

Birgitta and Ester have been performing and working together as a part of an acting group for about 5 years now, producing online content, sketches and short films. They will be taking this show to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August of 2019.

Buy tickets here.

May You Live In Interesting Times
„May You Live In Interesting Times“ - This ancient Chinese curse ironcially implies that disorder and conflict are more life-enhancing than peace and tranquility. The phrase is also something that Icelandic standup comedian Helgi Steinar is all too familiar with. From being interrogated about his comedy by Chinese police officers in Beijing to doing standup in Ukraine whilst the country was in the midst of martial law.

Using only wit and drunken cynicism, Helgi Steinar has taken these interesting times we live in and turned them into an internationally themed standup comedy show that tackles stereotypes, nationalism and the outrage culture that is driving us all apart.

Two appearances at the Reykjavik Fringe will take place at his home comedy club - The Secret Cellar - but one will take place at the popular local café Kaffi Lækur.

Comedian/cartoonist/carnivore Hugleikur Dagsson has a few thoughts and he's gonna say them out loud to see what you think about them. If you don't like them he's gonna pretend that was on purpose. It's basically him trying out new stuff and you are the test audience. Jesus, this "short" description was supposed to be at least 150 words and I've barely reached 60. Look, it's a stand up comedy show. Hugleikur Dagsson is a stand up comedian. It's not rocket science. Great, now I'm coming of as a bitch. I'm really not. I'm a pretty nice guy actually. OK... let's see... word count... WHAT!? Only 103 words?! For fucks sake. Alright, maybe some practical information: If you don't know who Hugleikur Dagsson is, he's on the internet. You can find him on a site called google. And now some random words: Bearface, hurtcoins, wonderspurt, manhoney and angelcum.

The Ambiguous Vagabond
He juggles everyday objects, plays music like a carnival gypsy, performs acrobatic stunts but ready to abandon all of those to share a beautiful moment and some good laughs.

The Ambiguous Vagabond is an ode to the art of silent humor, life on the road and the beauty of a simple life. A charming idiot whose virtuous and elegance makes older spectators happy and his stupidity and silliness makes young ones cry.... with laughter!

Born in Israel, based in Berlin and living in France, Gilad does not just play the Vagabond, he is the Vagabond- The ultimate traveller, the jack of all trades.
He is in love with places he has not yet visited and people he did not yet meet, and soon you will love him too.

Benchi's Baby
Buy tickets here.

Prisoner presents a world as he sees it.
Confined by an audience on all fronts, exposed on a bare stage, a eulogy turns into remembrance of battered truths in a world that isn't really interested in truths anymore. A story of love, murder and reality intertwined.

Benchi, the narrator’s cell mate and one of the two most powerful inmates in the prison takes Hila the social worker’s baby and raises it as if it were his own. From the toughest, meanest man in the prison yard the narrator gets a front row seat as he witnesses a breakdown unfold before his very eyes. Benchi is now the father. The narrator is the now the mother. They raise the baby, bring it food, change his diapers watch him take his first steps. The narrator finds himself in the centre of a psychotic break balancing between the rules of family life set by Benchi, the everyday harsh rules of prison life and his own battered victimised mind barely clinging to his own sanity.

The play is that of points of view and perceptions. The storyteller’s recap of events, his very grasp on reality changes as he goes back and forth through the events leading to the murder. It is a one-man’s eulogy of his partner but also the accounts of a man standing trial for murder and his accounts of how complicated relationships could be. A man standing alone surrounded to be judged by an “audience of his peers” with only his story to protect him.

Darkness covers the land, the people fear for their lives, hope is all but gone. There is one thing the people cling to: a legend. A legend of a great hero who will rise up and vanquish the darkness. A hero who will be remembered forever in as the savior of our world.

That hero, is you!

The Saga of the Shining Emblem is a one-of-a-kind improvised story-telling experience. Each night, one audience member is selected to be the hero of that night’s story. How they find it (or if they even bother to quest it at all) is totally up to them! It's like Dungeons & Dragons, only way less dice and way more silly. All accompanied by a live score!

Will you return the light to this world? Or join with the darkness? The choice is yours!

Issun Boshi
Folk tales play an important part in Nordic culture. Issun Boshi is the first known folk tale in Japan. We meet an old couple who live in the countryside of Japan. Their greatest wish is to have a child. When they do, he does not grow any bigger than a doll.

At age fifteen, the boy wants to explore the world and sets for adventure despite his parent's concern that he is so small. With the aid of the piano and clavichord (a wooden piano) we invite the audience into a magical landscape where little ones can do great things, and to be different becomes a strength.

code bend time
Our voices convey so much.

Erin Fowler: Qoya Workshop
Qoya is a movement practice for women (and female identifying people), based on the idea that through movement, we remember. We remember, as women, that our essence is wise, wild and free. Wise, wild and free also draws reference to the movement forms that we practice in Qoya. Wise calling on the wisdom of yoga, wild the creative expression in dance and free invites us to expand our capacity for pleasure in the body. In Qoya, we focus on how it feels, not how it looks. There is no way to do it "right"-- the only way you know is that it feels good.

Each Qoya class has a theme and for this workshop we will be focusing on the feeling of gentleness and how that feels in the body. How would it feel to be gentle with yourself and to give yourself what you truly need? If you’re looking for something a little different and would like to feel more connected to your body and spirit, in the company of like-minded women then perhaps this is for you.

You don't need any movement or dance experience to participate. Wear loose comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle. Workshop will be facilitated by Australian dancer and certified Qoya teacher, Erin Fowler.

Goodbye Gunther
A hilarious one-man comedy about death. Directed by multi award-winning John Wright.

Winner of the 2013 Mimetic Award

Buy tickets here.

When Gunther finds out he hasn’t long left to live, he starts to live life to the full…

Step into the lonely world of Gunther; a single, quiet man whose best friend is a goldfish. Gunther is like any other bachelor, spending his time playing with his radio, browsing the Lonely-Hearts section in the newspaper and contemplating life. The only difference between Gunther and any other single solitary guy is that contemplating life is suddenly moved to the forefront of his priorities when he is told he only has ten days to live.

Idiosyncratic, a little ridiculous, but never trivial, Goodbye Gunther faces death head on in a delightfully human mix of physical comedy, pathos, tragedy and joy.

An affectionate and ultimately life-affirming show, Following the success of The Confetti Maker, Frank Wurzinger has once again teamed up with award-winning theatre director John Wright (Trestle, Told by an Idiot) to create this hilarious yet touching one-man physical comedy about life, death and afterlife.

“A hilarious take on impending morality… Wurzinger uses clowning’s familiar antics as a way to tackle a serious and difficult subject.” The List

“For a show to end in tragedy, it is strange, yet heartening, to leave with a sense of renewed buoyancy.” Broadway Baby

Buy tickets here.

Why Are You So Old?
Buy tickets here.

Nick Jameson played Russian President Yuri Suvarov on the television show 24 and was a member of the classic rock band Foghat and a regular at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles. He has appeared in hundreds of TV shows, films, animated shows and video games and has released two solo albums.

He is also one ancient, obsolete, worn-out, broke-down, used-up, long-in-the-tooth, over-the-hill, odometer-done-run-out-of-numbers, moldy, decrepit, dilapidated, antiquated, way-past-the-expiration-dated, superannuated Individual.

But here’s the thing: Nick doesn’t give a damn. He lives and acts the same way he did when he was twenty, and he sees no good reason to change.

Some people have a problem with that. Like the guy who came up to him after a comedy show one night and said “Hey, you’re really funny! But...why are you so old?”

How do you answer a question like that? Well, obviously, you write a show about it. And, because you’re old, you do it quickly, before your memory goes all Bermuda Triangle on your ass.

Join Nick as he ponders eternal questions like: Is getting old a lifestyle choice? Is death a software glitch that somebody really needs to do something about? Is youth an experiment that went horribly wrong?

Old age is coming for that ass, people. Acquire the skills you’ll need to make it your bitch at Nick Jameson’s hilarious and moving mix of music, stand up and improv comedy and scintillating tomfoolery, Why Are You So Old?

Transparent Encounter
Work in progress of art as a tool for communication with anyone. I'd like to express myself. I'd like to learn to exist. I'd like to meet people, to see people exchanging glances and smiles. Obsessed to the transparent windows as frames to put myself in, as well as the beauty of people that I've met and that I'll meet. We'll see what will be written, what will happen, and especially whom to meet. Lost in the street, I believe that I'll get closer to my destination thanks to you that I've never met before.

Throwaway!
THROWAWAY!
An improvised show based on stuff you don’t need anymore

That old vase you got from your aunt years ago, your ex’s worn-out t-shirt or last week’s newspaper - they’re all going to be thrown away sooner or later. Why not do it at our show - and we’ll tell a story from it.

Buy tickets here.

Puppetry, storytelling and classical theatre blend in this improvised show based on stuff the audience members bring that they’d rather just throw away. With these objects as starting points we dive into all sorts of stories; funny, strange, sad or poetic. In a world of mass consumption, where we get more and more things and everything becomes disposable, Det Andre Teatret offers a show to reimagine the stuff we throw away - what they are, what they could have been and what we wish they were.

ABOUT DET ANDRE TEATRET
Det Andre Teatret is Europe’s busiest independent award-winning improv/fringe theatre, running their own venue based in Oslo. Their focus on strong improvisation skills and fine storytelling combined with an inherent theatricality and a playful risk-loving attitude have earned the company an outstanding international reputation over the years.

Det Andre Teatret has toured in Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, Cape Town, Bogotá, Tajikistan, Edinburgh, Berlin, Gothenburg, Stockholm, Aalborg, Amsterdam, just to name a few! In 2016, they toured the US from East to West and performed improvised Ibsen off-Broadway.

MOJAVE
In the middle of the Mojave Desert, dozens of miles from the nearest pavement, a lone phone booth stands on a dirt road. One evening, in the mid 1990's, the phone starts ringing…

~~

The Mojave Desert Phone was an isolated payphone in the middle of the Mojave Desert that became the world’s first viral phenomenon in the mid-1990s. It was discovered by Goddfrey ‘Doc’ Daniels who read about the payphone in the back of a zine. After writing about the phonebooth it became a worldwide sensation.

At its peak the once silent phone would be ringing off the hook, with people calling the number from all over the world. Soon it attracted travellers who would drive deep into the desert, led by the desire to talk to whomever happened to be calling. In an age before the internet, it became a place where being miles away from the nearest sign of civilisation was the only way to feel connected.

Our production tells the true story of the Mojave Desert Phonebooth, using a combination of fluid movement sequences, projected video output, verbatim conversation and a live DJ score. It was created from spools of archival information; interviews with Doc, transcripts of phone conversation, pirate radio broadcasts and e-zines and woven into a narrative by a talented ensemble of theatre makers. The show is on one hand a humorous character study of early nineties internet culture, on the other a nostalgic commentary on human connectivity.

What Remains
A ritualized experience through the body. The work is inspired by the evolution of two bodies, their gravitational dynamics and the sacred dimension of a meditative action. Emerging from the ground and through mutual cooperation finding one self in a circular coexistence with the other. Seeking for ways of relating, the rope is an element of holding into a concrete task. Using orbits as choreographic concepts, playing with collaboration, tension and limitations. Developing and transforming into walking mandalas, leading us to the encounter and coalition of these two bodies, clashing into their flesh, using and manipulating their skin.

We are interested in the dialogues between ideas from ritualistic elements in contemporary performance and dance with an ongoing corporal exploration. We have developed a process based on connection and communion, where we believe in dance and performance as todays human ritual expression. Driven by our need of generating sincere communication and deeper connection as performers and with the audience, we direct our work towards topics of togetherness and brotherhood. About reclaiming and rediscovering contact with our bodies and ourselves as physical sensing beings, striving to convey a particular point of view on intimacy and eroticism transcending moulds and social categories.

The Pearls of Pauline - Pearls of Wisdom, Compassion & Joy for Menopausal Women
The Pearls of Pauline – Pearls of Wisdom, Compassion & Joy for Menopausal Women.

Pauline, the host of the Menopause Morph Podcast, gives us some tips on overcoming the symptoms of menopause with a fun look at menopause and how to not just survive it but to thrive through it and beyond.

The Pearls of Pauline, is a mix of self help talks, jokes and a wee bit of cabaret to help inform and entertain women (and their partners) of how to navigate the pitfalls of peri-menopause and menopause.

Buy tickets here.

Pauline, who is originally from Glasgow, Scotland has been performing different genres since she was a teenager. While experiencing extreme peri-menopausal symptoms herself in her 40’s and not easily finding the answers to her questions about menopause, she decided to help throw open the doors to that taboo closet the subject of menopause has been hiding in. Her aim is to make the subject of menopause ok to be talked about in the home, at work and in society in general.

Menopause can be a bitch to go through but Pauline will take you by the proverbial hand to guide you with laughter and information, to help you ease into the second half of your life. Why not bring along your partner? Menopausal symptoms can make the woman feel as if she is going crazy and often problems arise in relationships. Pauline has helped countless men (and adult children) understand what their partners (and mothers) are going through.

L'uomo - Lo Giudice Dance

Lo-Giudice Dance are an internationally touring contemporary dance company based in the North-East of England under the direction of choreographer Anthony Lo-Giudice. Since 2012, the company has entertained audiences across the UK and Europe from small and intimate performances on the Grand Canal in Venice and The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, to large scale festivals such as Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Movimentale Napoli, Agitart Figueres es Mou and performances in UNESCO world heritage sites in Italy, Prague and Ukraine.

L'uomo (translating in Italian as ’The Man’) is a short dance theatre duet centred around two men. It is an enveloping of two people, entwining themselves through intimate gestures that interact and reciprocate the invitation to touch and connect to another. Caught between a place where delicate exchanges of affection and moments driven by the heart-felt become entangled with the discomforts of prejudice, L'uomo examines and highlights the concerns same-sex couples can still face when holding hands or showing affection in public.

SQ - Ali Heffetz

Ali Heffetz is an Israeli artist based in Berlin. Her works examine the threads between body, textures and sound, and touches topics related to emotional patterns and variety of mindsets. Her work had been shown in venues such as Färgfabriken Stockholm (Sweden), Birmingham International Dance Festival (UK), SOMA art gallery (Germany), Zimmer TLV (Israel) and United-C Art house (NL).

The piece ’sq’ is reflecting on our mental leftovers. Melted memories, fantasies, and all the in-betweens. It is a travel between our inner rooms, where underlaying desires are peeled off, endless ambiguity face rusty imagery, and blind determination is silently falling apart. Aiming to build visible structures made of physical sensation, ‘sq’ seeks to delve into the diverse surfaces of human emotional intensity. Transparent layers of polarities sketch a visual representation of the unconscious, and examines the characteristics of hidden realities.

We invite you to immerse yourselves in another world with a cast of poets who offer private poetry readings; a witch (Snæugla), who reads your fate in the cards; aerialists (Ungfrú Hringaná) and dancers (María Callísta) who will spin your sins into silk.

However the show itself will give you somewhat of a tour around the globe as Helgi recounts many of his performance experiences that have made him into the standup comedian he is today.

Join Anthony and Alex for a contemporary dance class and workshop as they lead you through a series of exercises focusing on shifting the body, exploring dynamics and rhythmic flow. The class will build to a final sequence and following this, they will facilitate a creative based task in which you will have the opportunity to explore your own choreographic vocabulary.

Anthony and Alex teach dance extensively across the UK and believe everyone can dance. This workshop is designed for those who already have experience in contemporary dance, but everyone is welcome.

Bring comfortable clothing you are able to move your body in and a bottle of water.

Frank Wurzinger: Clown Workshop (adults)
“Every human being is a clown, but only few have the courage to show it”
Charlie Rivel

Past students feedback:
“The workshop brought out such sparkle and tenderness from all of us.”

“Great fun overall and he’s a great facilitator… It was surprisingly cathartic and powerful experience.”

“I learned loads and laughed, brilliant workshop, embraced the ridiculous…”

This workshop is about finding the pleasure of being ourselves and playing with nothing and everything. The Clown might feel stupid, ridiculous and completely inappropriate- always with a huge sense of pleasure in playing.

We learn that it is okay to make mistakes and fail… the audience love the Clowns for sharing their unique ineptness with them. Our everyday weaknesses turn into the Clown’s strengths. Clowns liberate themselves from the demands of being ‘good’, proper and well behaved. We use a mixture of physical exercises, improvisation games and techniques to create clown theatre. We look at the performer-audience relationship and begin to discover and release our inner idiot.

Frank’s workshops have a strong emphasis on playfulness, fun and unlocking participants’ creativity. With a background of working with professional actors, community and youth theatre members, prisons and special needs groups, Frank creates a safe space to allow people to experiment and explore their potential,

With a Strong Voice
With a Strong Voice raises young female opinions through music, spoken word and movement. Eclectic singing group Sing & Shine Singers have devised an original performance piece that tells stories about their generation’s experiences of being a young woman.

The show discusses the struggles, expectations and the pressure of growing up, how we deal with it and whether there is a solution? For this theatrical and musical journey, the group has written songs themselves and arranged their own versions of known songs for the purposes of story with their conductor Sanna Valvanne.

Sing & Shine Singers is an experienced singing group that has performed together in Helsinki, New York and New Delhi. Now, for the first time they are delving into combining other art forms with their music. With a Strong Voice is a journey about losing one’s voice and finding it again. The six performers will explore current themes and aim to empower young audiences.

This is not a show. We will simply walk together.

Work to be seen somewhere in Hverfisgata, at some time of the day. Place, time and date of final walk to be confirmed during the festival.

Repertory Theatre
A young timid playwright is invited by a neurotic, Hamlet-obsessed national theatre manager to discuss his debut play. When art battles money things are never easy, but nothing on God’s green earth could prepare this young man for the zany ride he is about to take.

As it turns out the artistic director has a personal agenda concerning the playwright's deceased legendary actor/father who mysteriously died on stage whilst performing Hamlet. As the room becomes crowded with ghosts from the past, skeletons from the closet and other revived clichés, the thin borders between conscious and subconscious , theatre and real-life, implode in a groundbreaking climax.

Blackpool

Theatrical dance performance Blackpool takes the audience on a journey to the tough world of competitive ballroom dancing and reveals the rugged everyday life to be found behind the glamour. This intimate and autobiographical theatre experience has been made with love and contains drama and black humour.

The performance smells like self-tanning lotion and rasps like a suede sole shoe brush. Old wounds that have already healed are reopened, poked fun at and shared uncensored with the audience. Contemporary dance choreographers Milla Virtanen and Jaakko Toivonen are both former Finnish national ballroom dance champions and competed many times at the British Open Championships in Blackpool, England. Experiences from their ballroom dance youth and the Blackpool Dance Festival, organised since1920, serve as inspiration for the work.

The Saga of the Shining Emblem
Darkness covers the land, the people fear for their lives, hope is all but gone. There is one thing the people cling to: a legend. A legend of a great hero who will rise up and vanquish the darkness. A hero who will be remembered forever in as the savior of our world.

That hero, is you!

The Saga of the Shining Emblem is a one-of-a-kind improvised story-telling experience. Each night, one audience member is selected to be the hero of that night’s story. They are guided through a fantastical adventure with one actor serving as the narrator, supporting characters, and anything else our hero should encounter.

Our intrepid hero has one goal; to seek the Shining Emblem! an object of unimaginable power capable of granting one wish to whomever should find it!
How they find it (or if they even bother to quest it at all) is totally up to them! It's like Dungeons & Dragons, only way less dice and way more silly. All accompanied by a live score!

Will you return the light to this world? Or join with the darkness? The choice is yours!

The show is on one hand a humorous character study of early nineties internet culture, on the other a nostalgic commentary on human connectivity.

genes and tonic
Buy tickets here.

The Cypriot based dance artist Evie Demetriou whose work has toured extensively in Europe presents for the first time in Iceland two of her solo works as part of Reykjavík Fringe Festival.

“genes and tonic” is an uplifting performance which explores the relationship of the past and our present identity.
Do our genes matter? Are we free to choose our own destiny?
Taking the role of a wannabe DJ the performer travels the audience from her own memories to the present. Creating a vibrant and humorous environment she combines movement and text, using different types of communication from conversation to rap to music tracks.

“Challenging perceptions and social behaviour aren’t a first in Demetriou’s work as she aims to constantly question and challenge the boundaries of life, as well as of conventional dance.” Cyprus Mail

Don’t miss the chance to see this performance at Dance Atelier.

BETRAYAL
a contemporary dance performance

“Once I used to live in Nature. Now Nature lives in Me. Abandoned from the Source, I reopen within me a space…I am Earth, I am Water, I am Fire… The voices of the trees are calling my existence…I hear your voice…I can feel you… I am You.”

The performance is about the isolation of modern humans from Nature, themselves and others, and is influenced by the ecological destruction, the wars, and the alienation of humans who repeat the betrayal, remaining in ignorance and separation.

Ultimately, a betrayal is committed that does not contribute to the harmonious coexistence and respect among living beings, but to a state of ignorance and arrogance, viewing the other as non-equal and important, confronting them like matter that must be consumed. Shifting from the personal to the global, because of this betrayal, we see the overwhelming destruction of nature, the wars between ethnic groups, bullying and terrorism prevailing.

The concept, based on philosophical ideas regarding the theories of monism that consider the individual as an inseparable part of the Whole (Nature, Cosmic Soul, God), illuminates the need for reunification with all there is, and attempts to restore the human being as the species of free will and love.

Throwaway!

Dance Double Bill: L'uomo | SQ
Double bill: L'uomo - Lo Giudice Dance l SQ - Ali Heffetz

Choreography: Anthony Lo-Giudice
Dramaturgy: Vivien Wood
Dancers: Anthony Lo-Giudice and Alex Rowland
Music: Jóhann Jóhannsson

"when it turns red" is an interactive and humorous performance which questions the consequences of being busy on the body and the self. Does being constantly busy or declaring we are constantly busy symbolizes something? Is “being busy” related to our self-worth? Is it a status symbol?

Liquid States

The many faces of yourself constantly exploring new identities. Creating a kingdom of selves yet remaining restricted of how much you can express. Perhaps trying to escape an unrelatable world by plugging into a groundless reality with endless possibilities of expression, a mirror of thought. Some see freedom, others confinement and of course everything in between. Do you relate more to your most simplistic form or to the fabricated one? Which one is the authentic one? Is it delusional to try to find an answer of who you are in this inherent mass confusion? Days go by, piled with information but no action. Lubricated communication but sterile body connection. Stuck in a state of constant doing rather than constant being. Filtering to be desired or desired to be filtered. Alone in a formation of lonely individuals, heading to the same unknown direction.  But it is an exciting unfiltered blue light dopamine rush.

“Every artist was once an amateur.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

The 2019 Fringe Festival has the honour of premiering the first ever Youth Fringe Showcase. This unique show puts the art of teenagers, aged 13-19, front and centre and gives them the spotlight. By nurturing young artists and giving them a foot in the door, we hope to bring in bigger, better and more daring acts to the Fringe Festival for the present and well into the future. We ask our young artists to show their passions and give them a support network to take that first leap into the professional arts world. The Youth Fringe Showcase this year will include:

Unfold by Snærún Smith
Seed/bloom by Isis Helga Pollock
DRAZL by Eva Dögg Halldórsdóttir
Veður by Ingo Is An Artist / Ingveldur Þóra Samúelsdóttir

Youth Fringe is a free youth program for teenagers aged 13-18 where various workshops are on offer during the Fringe week, such as in theatre making, clowning, dancing, stand-up and marketing.

Tonight guests can however see what the participants themselves have got to bring to the stage, as RVK Fringe offers participants the chance to perform in a professional theatre and show their art to the audience.

All teenagers that are interested in participating in workshops starting on the 1st of July are asked to register through youth@rvkfringe.is - there is no registration fee.

This project is funded by Barnamenningarsjóður Reykjavíkurborgar (Children Fund of Reykjavík City).

Throwaway!

Winner of Best Indie Live Show at Norwegian Humor Awards 2018 for “Olli Wermskogs Improshow”
Finalist for Brighton Fringe Award for Excellence 2018 for “What I Talk About When I Talk About Running”

Winner of Best Dance in the 2019 Adelaide Fringe, FEMME explores concepts of femininity and female sexuality, the female body, the gender roles we conform to, or break against, and what it means to be powerful in a largely masculine dominant culture.

BETRAYAL
a contemporary dance performance

How they find it (or if they even bother to quest it at all) is totally up to them! It's like Dungeons & Dragons, only way less dice and way more silly. All accompanied by a live score!

Goodbye Gunther

Dömur og herra, Ladies and a gentleman, is a burlesque group with its base in Kramhúsið Dance Studio in Reykjavik. The group consists of performers of different ages and backgrounds who share a passion for entertaining and exploring various topics whilst challenging stereotypical ideas about beauty and sensuality. Our audiences express feelings of great happiness and warmth after our shows as well as changed perspectives of concepts like beauty and sensuality. We like that!

Each of our shows is theme based and unique so we would like to use the opportunity that the Reykjavik Fringe provides to make a Best of - show where we show our favourite acts.

However the show itself will give you somewhat of a tour around the globe as Helgi recounts many of his performance experiences that have made him into the standup comedian he is today.
